چکیده

Off-specular diffuse x-ray scattering measurements on both pure water and a homogeneous Langmuir monolayer of poly-g-benzyl-L-glutamate (PBLG) on water establish the validity of a proposed sum rule for scattering from capillary fluctuations on liquid surfaces. Excess scattering above the predicted capillary contribution is observed when the PBLG monolayer is compressed beyond its elastic limit. This is interpreted in terms of a second-layer inhomogeneity with a surface correlation length of !1000 Å. Excess off-specular scattering can be used to probe interface correlation lengths from 100 Å to 1 mm. [S0031-9007(98)07353-0]

Surface structure of liquid metals and the effect of capillary waves: X-ray studies on liquid indium

We report x-ray reflectivity ~XR! and small-angle off-specular diffuse-scattering ~DS! measurements from the surface of liquid indium close to its melting point of 156 °C. From the XR measurements we extract the surface structure factor convolved with fluctuations in the height of the liquid surface. We present a model to describe DS that takes into account the surface structure factor, thermal...

Effects of Thermal Roughness on X-ray Studies of Liquid Surfaces

The effects of thermal roughness on X-ray studies of liquid surfaces will be discussed. In contrast to solid surfaces, for which the surface height–height correlation function remains finite at large distances, for liquid surfaces thermal fluctuations induce a logarithmic dependence for distances smaller than a gravitationally induced cutoff that is of the order of mm. As a result of this there...

Entrance surface dose measurements for routine X-ray examinations in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari hospitals

Background: There is not any report on the radiation doses received by patients in diagnostic radiology sections in hospitals under control of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Medical Sciences University, in the south west of Iran. Objectives: The aim of this study is measurement of entrance surface doses (ESD) for the most routine types of X-ray procedures in radiology centers as part of ongoing d...

X-ray Scattering From Liquid Surfaces: Effects of Thermal Capillary Waves

As discussed in other articles in this issue of Synchrotron Radiation News, the availability of synchrotron radiation facilitated the development of X-ray reflectivity (XR) as an important technique for characterization of surface structure. Although the application of X-ray reflectivity to solids is relatively straightforward, as a consequence of the two-dimensional character of thermal fluctu...

Surface induced smectic order in ionic liquids - an X-ray reflectivity study of [C22C1im]+[NTf2].

Surface induced smectic order was found for the ionic liquid 1-methyl-3-docosylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethlysulfonyl)imide by X-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence scattering experiments. Near the free liquid surface, an ordered structure of alternating layers composed of polar and non-polar moieties is observed. This leads to an oscillatory interfacial profile perpendicular to the liquid ...
